Description

In 1906 the Fölsch family donated the houses at Fehlandtstraße 26 and Esplanade 10/11 to set up a Christian waiter's home.
After the First World War, paying guests were received in the Christian Hospice on the Esplanade.
In 1918 Jakob Kaltenbach and his English wife Daisy left Great Britain - after internment due to his German citizenship - and in 1920 they both took over the management of the hospice.
Due to the economic success, it was decided in 1927 to build a middle house in the gardens between Fehlandtstrasse and the Esplanade, and in 1927 the building was completed.
In the 1930s there was growing political pressure on the church-based foundation to secularise business operations.
Jakob Kaltenbach acquires the Christian Hospice in exchange for assuming the debt.
At the beginning of the 1940s the house became Flackheim, later Wehrmachtsheim.
In 1945 the British replaced the Germans, they stayed until 1949.
For the remaining staff, most of whom lived in the house, they hired Hero Kleinhuis, the Kaltenbachs' son-in-law, as head.
From 1949 a limited hotel operation was possible again, but it soon became clear that the hotel foundations of the building in the Esplanade had been irreparably damaged by the lowering of the Alster.
In 1954 it was decided to build a new one. In just one year and with full operation in the 2 remaining houses, today's building was built in the Esplanade.

In 1958, the small single rooms on Fehlandtstrasse proved to be no longer rentable, which resulted in the demolition of the building up to the ceiling of the ground floor and the construction of the current building.
